Assize Court Chambers
Terms of Business
Introduction
This document sets out the terms on which we accept instructions and charge for our services. Our aim is to provide an effective and efficient service to both lay clients and professionals.
Persons Responsible for Your Work
Great care and consideration is always taken to allocate Counsel to a case. Early discussion of your requirements is always encouraged so we can strive to meet your needs. We consider continuity of Counsel in a matter paramount, however if such occasion arises where a return is unavoidable, you will be notified as soon as practicably possible and offered a suitable alternative.
Fees
The basis on which fees are charged is dependant on a number of factors, starting with the area of work the case falls into.
For a detailed breakdown of our fees structure in any sector, please contact the Senior Clerk to discuss your requirements or request a brochure.
Billing and Payment
Unless we inform you otherwise, in writing, our practice is to bill matters when each item of work is completed and thereafter one month later when the recommended Bar Council procedure will commence. Obviously there are certain areas where this is not an applicable procedure, so please feel free to contact us to clarify the position with regards to your case.
Unless agreed in writing all privately funded cases are for payment within one month. There is a presumption in these matters that you have been put in funds prior to instructing Counsel. Solicitors are reminded of their personal obligation to pay Counsel’s fees.
VAT
All Barristers at Assize Court Chambers are VAT registered. VAT is not quoted in the fee but will be added unless there is a zero-rating or an exemption applies.
Termination of Instructions
Ideally Counsel will continue to act until the conclusion of the case or instructions terminate. If a conflict arises or a case needs to be returned, you will be contacted and your agreement sought as to substitute Counsel.
Complaints
If you feel dissatisfied with our services in any way then please feel free to contact the Senior Clerk at Chambers, Carly Ash-Lucas either:
1. By telephone on 0117 9264587 or
3. By writing to Carly Ash Lucas, Assize Court Chambers,14 Small Street, Bristol. BS1 1DE.
We operate the Bar Council’s complaint procedure. For details please contact the Clerk to Chambers.
It is not necessary to involve solicitors in order to make your complaint but you are free to do so should you wish. Information passed to us is kept confidential and will not be disclosed to others unless authorised by you or required by the Law.
